Judgement
of Tears : Anno Dracula 1959
Judgement of Tears blends horror and humor remarkably well. Semigraphic
scenes of bloodsucking and neck biting are interspersed with humorous
name-dropping. Among the guests at Vlad's wedding are a black-clad,
gloomy couple named Addams, a British spy named Bond, and Orson Wells.
Edgar Allan Poe is living as a scriptwriter; since being turned, he
hasn't had an original idea. In the end, Judgement of Tears is as
much a tale of intrigue as it is a horror novel. The backdrop is an
old story of petty politics, set in a world that vampires, zombies,
and even Frankenstein-like monsters share with the living. The flashes
of wit serve to anchor the story to the real world and provide a connection
to 20th-century popular culture. The ending reminds readers that politics
prevail--whether for mortals or immortals. |
The
Land Beyond the Forest : Dracula and Swoop
Contemporary U.S. playwright Wellman has never been easy to like.
His eccentric, surrealistic works, with their extreme characters,
manic wordplay, and complicated, confusing plots, seem out of step
at a time when realism dominates American theater. But when Wellman
adapted Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1994, his nonrealistic style actually
captured its spirit and horror better than more traditional, linear
stage versions, partly because Wellman's experience with nonlinear
storytelling prepared him... |
Legends
of Dracula (A & E Biography)
Book Description: Also known as Vlad the Impaler, Prince Dracula ruled
near Transylvania more than 500 years ago and was notorious throughout
Europe as a fierce tyrant who tortured and murdered many people. When
writer Bram Stoker combined Dracula's blood-thirsty reputation with
popular vampire folklore, the literary character Count Dracula was
born. With his sharp teeth, pale skin, and staring eyes, he continues
to rule the world of horror today. Author Tom Streissguth tells the
chilling tale of the real-life... |
The
Letters of Mina Harker
Synopsis: A fixture in the San Francisco literary scene for over a
decade, Dodie Bellamy will surpass the expectations of her many fans
with this new book--which traces a woman's relationships with three
very different men and her involvement in 20th-century vampire culture.
This is a nearly indescribable epistolary novel that brings the heroine
of Bram Stoker's DRACULA forward into the acronymic age of MTV, HIV,
ATM, VCR, etc. |
The
Licking Valley Coon Hunters Club
Book Description: The LICKING VALLEY COON HUNTERS CLUB is a science-fiction,
action-adventure, mystery-P.I.-suspense, humorous horror novel. Yep,
it really is. You have to read it to believe it. Those of you who
haven't read any of Hopkins' Zolotow tales, you have quite a treat
in store. Those of you who are familiar with this intrepid P.I. won't
be disappointed -- this is perhaps the best one to date. |
Look
for Me by Moonlight
Spending the winter with her father and stepmother at a remote Maine
inn, Cynda falls in love with a too-good-to-be-true older man, and
he uses his charms to turn Cynda and her young stepbrother against
their family. With an understated psychological component, this well-written
story of a vampire preying on the emotions of young people builds
to a high level of tension. |
Lord
of the Vampires : The Diaries of the Family Dracul
Synopsis: In the conclusion to her terrifying, meticulously researched
trilogy, Jeanne Kalogridis brilliantly melds historical facts about
Vlad Tsepesh--Vlad the Impaler, the historical Dracula--and the characters
in Bram Stoker's classic Dracula. After the death of his half-brother
and his father at the hand of Vlad, Abraham van Helsing faces the
ultimate battle with an entity more evil than Vlad himself: the Lord
of the Vampires. |
Lucy's
Child
Book Description: The tense atmosphere Beth's sister causes when she
comes to stay is strained further by Lucy's references to Beth's inability
to conceive. When Lucy has a fatal accident, she leaves the legacy
of her child, providing Beth's only chance of motherhood. But forces
are bent on Beth remaining childless. |
Lust
for Blood : The Consuming Story of Vampires
Review: Not necessarily a cerebral read, but very interesting stories
of those past and present with blood fetishes. Like a good ghost story,
but true (as far as we know). Good history of sickos & murderers.
